New boys soccer coaches ready to take reins
By
DAN STICKRADT • O&E Staff Writer • August 10, 2008
When Barry Brodsky hits the soccer pitch Monday, the highly successful coach will
do so at a new venue.
Brodsky, who has served as the head boys coach at Birmingham Groves since 2001, was hired as the new coach at Birmingham Brother Rice this past spring, taking the reins from
Rice grad Angel Ojeda, who resigned after two years at the helm. "It should be interesting," said Brodsky, who has enjoyed
tremendous success at all-girls Birmingham Marian, right next door to Rice, since 2001. With the MHSAA's first official
day of fall training Aug. 11, Brodsky won't be the only boys soccer coach at a new school. Phil Moore has taken over at
Rochester Stoney Creek, Nathan Norman is in charge at Rochester Adams, Joe McCarty inherits the post at Birmingham
Groves and Douglas Macauley is the new coach at Bloomfield Hills Lahser. "The
Rice administration approached me earlier this year about it and we worked it out," said Brodsky, whose best year at Groves
was 2006, when the Falcons finished 19-2-2 and reached the regional semifinals. "It wasn't easy to leave Groves. I had some
good teams at Groves and enjoyed my time there. But everything worked out. It gives Joe (McCarty) a chance to have
his own program, too. "Rice did reach the regional finals last year and they do return some good players," he added. "But
they were only 0-5-3 in the Catholic League. We need to improve on that." For Moore, Norman, McCarty and Macauley, this
is their first head varsity boys soccer coaching positions, although all have coached the sport at various levels. McCarty
took over the varsity girls program at Groves this past spring in a rebuilding campaign, as Groves finished 4-10-4. The Groves boys team was 9-7-7 last fall despite graduating nine starters from the 2006 campaign. McCarty was an assistant
with the Groves boys program for three seasons. "We have some good young talent coming up," said McCarty, who played at
Brighton High School and with Florida International in college. "It's going to be an interesting season. I'm looking forward
to it." Moore comes to Stoney Creek from the WAZA soccer club. He replaces Kip Pichel, who was 88-29-15 during Stoney Creek's first six seasons
as a school. Under Pichel, the Cougars were 11-6-4 last season and consistently in the state's top 10 from 2003-07, including
the Division 2 state runner-up trophy in 2004. "I've coached club, U-13 with both the girls and boys for about five or six
years now, but this is my first high school job," said Moore, who also played at Brighton and for two years each at Schoolcraft College and Madonna University. "I'm really excited because we have a lot of talent, and a lot of seniors who
played in the program last year that are trying out. Kip (Pichel) did an excellent job starting the program and building it
up to where it is today. Stoney Creek plays in one of the toughest divisions in the state." Macauley served as an assistant girls soccer coach at Lahser earlier this decade under former coach Gary French. After living near Asheville, N.C., the past few years, he comes back to Michigan to take over the Knights,
who have also enjoyed great success during the past decade. "My wife accepted a job up here and I also took a (club soccer)
coaching position with the Troy Soccer Club," Macauley said. "That had something to do with it. I heard there was an opening
with Lahser's boys team and I went for it. It couldn't have worked out any better. I already know the school when I coached
with Gary French. It's a great school with great facilities." Macauley takes over for Kevin Argue, who departed for Las Vegas, Nev., after one season. He is the Knights'
fifth head coach in a decade. "I've coached soccer
for many years with different teams. I've received my advanced national (coaching) diploma and my Scotland 'B' Licence. But
I've never been as excited as I am with this team," Macauley said. "I know some of these kids when I coached (club) here a
few years ago with the Birmingham Blazers. We have a really good crop of players. It's a great opportunity."
