Study Finds Special Warm-up Can Reduce Risk Of ACL Injuries In Female Athletes

Numerous studies have shown female athletes have a significantly greater risk for ACL knee injuries compared to their male counterparts, but a new study conducted by researchers at the Centers for the Disease Control and Prevention suggested a simple warm-up program may lower that risk. It's called the PEP program. PEP stands for Prevent Injury and Enhance Performance. The program is different from traditional warm-ups in that it focuses on improving the biomechanical techniques involved in jumping, stopping and turning.Researchers at the CDC had 61 women's soccer teams either try the new program, or stick to their traditional warm-up. They found athletes using the PEP program suffered no ACL injuries during practice, compared to six injuries in the traditional group.

The PEP athletes were also less likely to suffer an injury during the second half of the season.Researchers say the program can be activated without additional equipment or extensive training. The study was published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine. To learn more about the PEP program and download a copy of the exercises, click here
